It would start off with a shit ton of reconnaissance. Dozens of satellites and plenty of airplanes too. Then it basically becomes a contest of which side can fire more missiles at the enemy. China would fire its ballistic missiles. America would rely primarily on arsenal submarines and aircraft carriers. Naval gunfire would be basically non existant except in the Korean peninsula where shit would be tight and personal. See pic related, Dong Hae is one of the few cases of a modern ship that has more than one cannon, it has 6 plus machine guns and CIWS and it's not even a frigate. Straits like Hormuz or, as you mentioned, Malacca, would be controlled by diesel submarines. There are plenty of modern midget subs that were tailor designed to operate in those straits.
