What they meant is to be more sure in your lines, rather than using multiple attempts to make the line you want. Erasing is perfectly fine, but it can become a crutch to your improvement.
By doing a lot of figure drawing and thinking more about what your'e going to draw and what the overall shape is going to be, you will improve far faster than making a bunch of thoughtless lines and erasing until you get the shape you want. I've asked my friends who went to art school for tips on improving and they all said the same thing, whether they went for animation or illustration. Solid, clear lines are important.
It's really hard to break out of that sketchy habit, but it can be done. Gesture drawings are a pain, but every artist I talk to swears by them for quick improvement.
