The border of death still seems somehow shortened, Reimu should traditionally have the longest and I still seem to press it fast enough only when I see the hit coming. some seconds earlier.

Also, the Overdrive version of a spellcard unlocks after you beat all their other versions. Beating it in stage seems to be enough.
