Hermits use divine means and meditation to extend their life. They can become Living Gods, Celestials and even Yamas. Hermits are usually hunted by powerful demons coming directly from hell to take their soul, every hundred years or so. People mistake these powerful Onis for Shinigamis.

Also, Youkai that have a lot of mystical energy, such as Tengus and Onis can become hermits.
