How valuable is JLPT N3 when applying for jobs in Japan? Should I skip it and go for N1/2 instead, or is N3 still acceptable?

I can imagine that the better the certificate, the better the odds. On the other hand, the sooner you can go there, the faster you'll develop from "somewhat conversational" to fluent. I've been doing Anki since last month, picked up a grammar guide and started reading a little. I was hoping to get a decent certificate at a JLPT next year, but I don't know how realistic this goal is.
