As evening came, the smoke dissipated and the destroyer moved south to the lee of the big base island Yo-do. The captain sent a coded status and damage report to Fleet headquarters, and the return dispatch ordered the destroyer out of the harbor to a repair ship just off the coast. After a night of welding and pumping, the Owen was ordered back on station. Her configuration differed from the greyhound of yesterday. There were shrapnel holes in much of her superstructure, particularly her forward funnel, and a large steel plate was welded on her bow. But everything worked, and the tattered ensign streamed out from the truck, seeming to give evidence of spirit and confidence.

Later, the crew learned that their ship had been reported sunk by enemy gunfire. But they had in fact survived a combat ordeal, and the men faced the next round with the coolness of veterans.

One the second day back, the Owen rescued a downed AD Skyraider aircrew. The smoking plane had barely made it over the humpbacked mountains before it pancaked into the relative safety of the harbor waters, its crew to be picked up by the destroyer's whaleboat. The pilot underwent successful emergency surgery on the ship's wardroom table. His life was saved by the young surgeon who had come aboard with the commander.
