Any that can read or keep oral histories could be aware, its also indicated that for some races their past influences their current behavior.

Mersharks are the biggest example of this I can think of. They are exceedingly careful with their husband outside of sex, possibly because of how dangerous they know they were in the former era, wherein they were basically living weapons, and this seems to have given them a deep desire to help people too.
