Ai was always way too self conscious, she was angry that she wasn't a big talker like Rika or the other members, so she became withdrawn and spacey. Most of her Hello Morning characters generally weren't that great either because of this. But she is excused because she is such a good singer and is the heart of Musume.

I think the prolonged Yossie and Miki phase may have really done a number on the current lineup. Although, Koharu shot progressed through that period and was able to start her brief successful solo career. However she seems stuck in between stages now and is wearing down the other members.
Also
I think at least some of us can agree that Shige's personality is playing out rather well across the different appearances of late, she was able to play off Rika & Yuko back then and emmerged as a good conversationalist.

Oh she certainly is but her personality was formulated based on this, I'm not hating on her but its like the first born who gets all the toys in a way, not the best personality but a great competitor and singer.

I always had weird suspicions of why they changed the format for that last appearance there, I think it was a Tsunku move to calm any flare ups between the Pandas and Koharu and Mittsi.
