It's mainly the idea that the man is the breadwinner, stays out all night working and then drinking and dining with his coworkers, comes back home whenever he wants (or not at all), etc., while the wife is often expected to remain a housewife - not work - raise children, keep the house spotless, do laundry every day, cook perfect meals, and do all the shopping. It's not everybody, but it's still somewhat common even in younger relationships.
