I think it was Deleuze who once talked about our civilization mark being the creation of confinement institutions: the prison, the hospital and the school; reisdents sort of wear uniforms on all those...

However, I read sometime ago that there was some movement in Japan to ban serafuku and make school uniform unisex (tracksuits or something), so girls wouldn't get molested by chikan so often. Apparently, the girls oppose to this: wearing a pretty uniform is part of their teen longing to grow up and become feminine.
