They also would need to explain it at some point, and revealing it right before it actually becomes relevant in a bigger way would make it seem like an even bigger asspull. If the final arc manages to do the personal conflict right when everyone knows about the situation and the characters are actually interacting rather than just watching Satoko sneaking around this kind of stuff will already be in the past by then in comparison.

I do agree that he should just have gone with something supernatural though. There was minor set up for the multiple infected in Neko, but it's not like it was something people talked about much.

I actually think the censorship shading made that page look cooler, although the panel with the scissors sticking out of Rika and the kids holding them is much creepier uncensored, since the details were completely lost in the censored version.
