oh no another kanji shitfest

I know this has been discussed to death, but, what is the best way to learn kanji, if I am an adult foreigner trying to learn? I have tried Heisig, but I find his lack of readings just stupid, and I've tried learning grade school levels or whatever they're called, but they come in no use when it comes to picking up a manga and having to use the furigana to read something like 'kill'. I can live with that though.

Anyway, bascially, anyone out there already read Japanese well, and, if so, what do you find the best way to learn kanji is? I've tried heisig, it's fast, but seems pointless, any other effective methods?
