I was thinking more along the lines of as he lays dying from the first fight, his burning desire and dying wish to finally defeat Yuugi would manifest himself into a youkai, as is typical of grudges and last wishes in Japanese lore.
Every day he would come by to fight Yuugi, losing every single time. His one goal, and entire existence is to just defeat her even once.

When the day finally comes that he reigns victorious, he would wither away in Yuugi's arms as his one goal, his one centerpiece for his entire existence has finally been completed and he can finally rest in piece. That burning desire for that one victory was all that held his form together and the one thing that still kept him on the mortal plane.
As death finally came for him, his last memory would be of Yuugi clutching him close and softly whispering "I love you..."
At last, his dying wish has come true.
