WW2 is literally the perfect time in history to create media out of. Video games, anime, books, live action shows, movies, documentaries, manga, comic books, then there are miscellaneous stuff like scale models and artwork. Seeing girls taking the role they could not predominantly take back then makes my dick hard not because of their lewd nature (there hardly is any in Kancolle anyway), but because they are sisters and friends with feelings, some rivals. The fanart is also a big contributor to the success, especially since the theme of the game allows for fun things and depressing things to happen.
