Fatigue cooldown starts the moment you sortie out. You can start, refresh without doing anything, do another, and they'll be tired. (2?) MVPs from battles will give shiny status to that unit.

But you really shouldn't be sending a unit out again immediately anyways. Dock them and make a sandwich or something.

So I guess the water skating thing is canon, now.
