Maybe, but didn't Kadokawa say that they were shipgirls that were previously sunk? Plus that'd be awkward to have, say, Akagi getting sunk and then turning into some kind of evil Essex carrier. I know that the Abyss using Imperial units as supposed to Metric doesn't help matters, but considering there's really no information about the Abyss other than they're evil aliens.
