“Let go.” I don’t dare look at her. To look at her would mean acknowledging her. One does not acknowledge insects before crushing them underfoot. I give her only a moment of time to rethink her mistake of pursuing me.

“Please!” and yet she refuses to surrender, “I didn’t mean to insult you!”

“I’ll say again. Let. Go.”

“I will not!”

What a stubborn girl. I bat aside the master of this palace much like a human would to a mosquito buzzing around their head. I’ve no care of what becomes of her. She may as well be dead, though no proper youkai would dare give up the ghost from such a weak tap. I feel a slight stinging sensation in the topmost wing on my back where I contacted her, and hear the dull thud of her body hitting the wall.

“Apologies will only take you so far, girl.” I say as I resume walking.

Then I hear her voice, “You think I don’t know that?” She doesn’t sound pained, just angered by my detachment from her situation. Though I should say, ‘hear’ is not the proper word for it. Her voice seems to resonate inside my head.

“Oh? She’s alive,” I laugh, “So what’re you gonna do? Make me apologize?” I turn to face her.

“I’ve already given up on that,” She ‘says’, her lips unmoving but the words as clear as day in my mind, “I think you would have gone so far as to have chosen death over that option.”

And now she gets it.
