Anon lay on his futon after the world turned dark. Sleep was coming to him, tomorrow wouldn't be better but at least for now he didn't have to be conscious.

His eye lids grew heavy, there was snores on his lips already, Ran's vermicelli... Anon sank into the worlds of dreams, grateful for the respite of the horror he faces everyday.

His lifelines were few here, very few could resist Yukari's machinations after all. Fortunely he had one friend he could rely on. It was his memories of the time before he migrated to Gensokyo.

His dreams came alive and he was watching a stage, lights shone down onto it. It was a simple thing, Japanese style and with artful scrolls and other decorations lining the wall behind a few chairs.

On those chairs there sat three women, he recognized them all. Yukari, Nitori, Ran who sat on Yukari's lap and Chen who sat on Rans. It looked uncomfortable...

Nitori was babbling about something, it was boring and Yukari had that gleam in her eye of pure mischief. It was fine though, anon was the crowd and nothing bad happens to the crowd.

As Nitori rambled on about Shikigami operating systems Yukari spoke up, holding up Ran in both hands while she maintained that perfect sitting pose as she wasn't being held aloft.

Yukari began her rant as she stared straight at Anon, "I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Chen, is in fact, RAN/Chen, or as I've recently taken to calling it, RAN plus Chen.

Chen is not a shikigami unto herself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning RAN shikigami made useful by the RAN houselibs, math
utilities and vital spin components comprising a full shikigami as defined by ZUN.

Many shikigami users run a modified version of the RAN system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of RAN
which is widely used today is often called "Chen", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the RAN shikigami, developed by the Touhou Project.

There really is a Chen, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the shikigami they use. Chen is the servant: the part in the shikigami
that is just a stage 2 boss without the RAN component; but an extra stage boss with it.
The servant is an essential part of a shikigami, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete shikigami. Chen is
normally used in combination with the RAN shikigami: the whole shikigami
is basically RAN with Chen added, or RAN/Chen. All the so-called "Chen"
distributions are really distributions of RAN/Chen."

Anon finally understood.
