Inspiration wise, the Exiles are based off mainly 80s and 90s robots in design, with bits of 50s aesthetic creeping in. Most larger machines are composed of objects like barrel vacuum cleaners, and 90s computer components (one of the robots' torsos is in fact a PC-98).

The microchip bugs, as well as the whole justification of the Exiles' existence are based off of an enemy encountered in the The Genius of Sappheiros. Since it would be impossible for an electronic object to become a tsukumogami, the "possessed" explanation is used for their presence (not sure if that's how it was used in the Genius of Sappheiros, or if they were even given an actual explanation beyond being generic enemies).
