I think that, in Gensokyo, we can consider traditional gender roles to be somewhat weakened. While I don't contest that artisans were almost universally men in real life, a pocket dimension where women are depicted to be far more powerful than men that has developed independently for over a century with little oversight from some sort of governing body would likely have departed from that, I think. I realize that men can be powerful in Gensokyo, by the way; we just don't know of any besides maybe Youki and a couple of the gods.

Anyway, my point is, if a woman wants to start whittling or whatever, who's going to tell her to stop?
