Hello, /jp/. I hear this is the place for help on things like this.

I was recently out with an attractive asian lady friend (along with some other fine chaps), and we decided to stop by an asian restaurant. Now, being a fine purveyor of asian culture, I thought this would be a good time to show off.

I ordered some soup that looked good, and when the waitress came by with it and a spoon, I smiled and asked her for chopsticks instead. She seemed confused, but after repeating the request a few times she handed me a pair.

My friends were giving me a weird look. My asian lady friend had raised eyebrows, clearly impressed. However, I was utterly humiliated when I went to eat my soup with chopsticks and was unable to summon the finesse needed to transfer the decidedly non-solid meal into my mouth. She buried her face in her palms, my other friends laughed. It was a disaster. Me, who despite being white, is more Japanese than most Japanese people! Me, being humiliated like that! Clearly, I have a long way to go. What should I do in order to better train myself for next time, /jp/?

You guys obviously have enough interest in Japan to be reading this board, so I ask you:

What is it about Japan that appeals to you?
