Perhaps; my own experience isn't representative for everyone after all (as is the same as yours). However, if you don't see those words after a while you'll forget it. In order to not forget, you use Anki. Your argument of just "reading more" doesn't work if you don't see the specific word often enough. Also I don't see the down side for throwing words into your mined deck. If you're committed to learning the extra work will benefit you.

At the end of the day it's about how much you value the Anki system. I personally swear by its effectiveness, which is why I want to get back into it.

It was always suggested in the past to do the two decks simultaneously. Your mined deck supplements your reading while the Core enhances your "general knowledge".
