I'd get a shop before the ranch. Sell all junk you find and cooked foods in your shop while building out your cooking skill and hopefully crafting skills. Use the gold to later get that ranch to sell even more steaks in your shop. Can also craft cheese from the creatures you milk and sell them for gold too along with cooked eggs and skins.
