If you are visiting Kure anyway, the navy cemetery in Nagasako Park is also worth a visit, the place has a lot of monuments dedicated to various warships from ww2.
Also if you are into modern ships, there is a daily boat tour that lets you see warships moored in the bay upclose. You'll be able to see JS Kaga upclose if she's in the pier that day.
