Why is Higurashi so scary even though I already know what's going to happen?

Right now I'm playing through Onikakushi-hen; I'm near the middle right now. I'm seriously fucking terrified during some parts even though I know they're coming, like the needle in the ohagi. The eerie BGM and the abrupt sound effects make me hesitate to keep reading because of the tension.

I don't remember much of the anime since I watched it a couple years ago, but I remember the first arc being suspenseful then everything after it being boring shit. Are the rest of chapters after Onikakushi like that too? Or does it keep up the suspense while trying to find answers?
