I think the culture of otakus/nerds/geeks didn't really change it's just that in this modern day and age it's been mostly pushed out of the spotlight by the advent of the big tech corpos, which sort of shrunk the internet - now "The Internet" for most people is synonymous with Google, Facebook, Twitter and Reddit. Another modern menace, though long time in the making, would be political activism in various media. While injecting some contemporary political commentary can be done well and with tact, disclaimers in TTRPGs like "No fascists allowed" and "The author of the source material was racist" are the polar opposite of that.

At the same time, I don't think that this satus quō will last forever. Fun stuff similar to what used to be still gets made (Dovahhatty's "Unbiased History of Rome" series immediately spring to mind) and with the advent of decentralized federated platforms like Pleroma, Mastodon and Matrix we may see a return of the niche, yet vibrant communities that made the 2010s internet what it was. Moral of the story - things may seem pretty bad right now, but take it easy, make your own contributions and everything will be fine in the end.

Note:
Of course, I never experienced the 2010s internet first hand as I was born in 2000 so feel free to disregard everything I said and call me a newfag as you see fit.
