I think he just have high demand for the series, but my problem is when people like him instantly think the whole fandom share his sentiment.
The new characters actually get considerable amount of attention and fanworks. People simply don't abandon the older ones so their accumulated presence doesn't go away and you end up need to dig around beyond the surface to get contents of newer characters.
Sure they will probably never hold a candle to established popular cast but there aren't so much void in their presence that it marks the death of the series.
