Its same like for movie stars or singers.
Just the idol industry is trying to give the fans the feeling that they can be close to their idol and influence their success.Also they idols still try to have the "normal girl" look that the fans don't feel like she is so high above them.

Personally I think some idols can be very entertaining and funny.
