You have to have something "really good" then. Newrin did the mistake of making people believe it's a dumb moege, while ending up doing quite a few things moege fans really don't like, and not doing or badly doing the stuff they buy the game for. It's good, but that's not enough.

That said, real genre shifts (Newrin doesn't actually do that, it just had bad advertisement in a way) are usually handled really badly anyway. Just take a look at stuff like Princess Witches. It switches from moege to serious and back several times, while the characters are about 0% suited for the serious part. Meaning, once you get finally used to everything, characters start to adapt a little and so on, it becomes a moege again ruining everything. Back then however, this alone would give it praise. Nowadays, it'd be the opposite. So being kinda bad at it, or even just good will likely not cut it.

I don't think it's necessarily wrong to try and sell what you advertise. What devs need to learn is that they don't need to be conform with the "rules" for every damn little thing. You don't need to go from moege to gangrape.
But how about a sister route that is not romantic for once? That's not killing the other routes and can be incredibly fresh as a "side-route" or whatever, also making actual romantic sister routes a little more special again, and not the most typical thing in the medium.
Or how about you go a little away from using CG for "showing girl alone in random situation", instead of actually using them a little more for the plot elements? I've recently read Kiss Ato, and while it's a fairly nice moege, this part is really awful. The cast works at and talks about the projects they all work at for university end of year stuff, but you think you see anything they make even just ONCE? No. Of course this kinda means I'm asking them to go back to the charage idea that kinda became our current moege, as it's easier to write and cheaper to create art for. But still, I dunno.

tl;dr: You don't need massive genre shifts to "screw over" your fans. Just a little more effort in general would be nice. One step at the time. Some do it though. Not all do it well, but I'm glad they exist. The "cheap moege nr. 5878941" guys who disappear after 1 or 2 moege however need to learn, that this shit is never going to stick for them, and they are better off trying something a little new.
