Hey DJT, I'm currently debating whether I should do Kodanshas Kanji Learners Course or not.

Is anyone around that went through it and wants to share his experience with me?
Does it pay off to invest the time studying it, compared to just learning by reading and mining?

Do you benefit from knowing the "general" meaning of a kanji with all the irregular readings and 当て字?

I mean knowing the meaning of the kanji in 影響 probably won't help me guess the meaning, but being able to distinguish them from other similar kanji might be nice?
But then again I could always look up the kanji I have trouble with once need it.

I'm afraid of wasting time on studying kanji and then encounter things like this 八百屋 or 流石 where I won't be able to make out it's meaning nor it's reading if I didn't already learn it.

While I'm at it, should I really mine every word with it's kanji, even if it's "usually written in kana"?
I've never seen 流石 or 矢っ張り written in kanji while reading, but I once saw 沢山.

- 6k words on my 1st year (managed over 7000), meaning 90% of reading covered;
- All Joyo Kanji until the middle of 2nd year (by April I will have 100 left to learn), meaning 99% of non-furigana shit covered;
- All of Tae Kim until the middle of the 2nd year as well, giving me the tools to start practicing and reading properly;
- Read a decent book by the end of this 2nd year, and studying it instead of just "getting" the message like I've been doing with manga;
- All jinmeiyo by the end of 3rd year;
- Proficiency by the end of 3rd year;

I'll see how it goes. Might as well start to pay for one-on-one lessons or find a language partner for 3rd year.
