The worshipers aren't necessary. Kyuubi are on par with gods, but they don't need to be faith-powered.
That's why it takes them nigh-on 1000 years to get there. The mythological basis is that the accumulate power with age.
Interestingly enough, this is more of a carry-over from Chinese mythos than an original feature of Japan's.

It's a strange universe indeed, one contained within the tail/s of every sufficiently fluffy monstergirl.
The ground is fur, just like that on the tail's owner, but far softer. Those who enter the Mofuverse will have to beware of pits, where the fur becomes exceptionally soft. Step upon this fur, and you'll find yourself sinking into it like quicksand. Fall into the pit entirely, and it'll make being trapped in a kitsune's mofu ball feel like a mere headrub in comparison.
As the concept of time in the Mofuverse is superseded by the concept of fluffiness, any who fall into the pits will be subject to an eternity of delirious softness. Their only hope of escape is if the tail's owner reaches in herself to pull them out.

Some say that if you travel for long enough in the Mofuverse, beyond even the reach of the tail's owner, you'll eventually find the Fluff Core: the object that is the very reason fluffy tails are so soft and fluffy in the first place. No one knows what would happen if someone were to touch it, though some theorise that, as the source of all softness, any who do would be physically and mentally unable to stop stroking it.

Scientific expeditions have been made into the Mofuverses of fluffy tailed volunteers before, but none have returned with a Fluff Core. Some have even never returned at all.

I can understand that. I usually take it in small doses. Any more and the nice tingly feeling start to feel a little subdued.
If I do write about it, I'll do my best to make it appeal to everyone, with a little something that ASMR enthusiasts might like, but which non-enthusiasts would still be able to enjoy.
