The annoying thing is that they effectively already have that functionality. You can browse exclusively by media posts for an account and you can also see a tiled gallery if you search for something by image. They just need to smash the two together where they use the tiled gallery layout for media posts of a single account. I don't super know how Mastodon instances work or are configured individually, but I know at least Pawoo has this setup for certain layouts. Clicking the picture opens it up full size and gives you a link to the original post if you want context.
