I think the problem stems from attempting to add a third dimension to something that would otherwise be two dimensional. I would argue that even artists like alphonse struggle with trying to implement the anime facial structure to painting. It seems that the best way would be to incorporate the shadows the face casts on itself primarily the nose and eye brow ridge. It also seems in general for this type of drawing artists will only highlight one cheek to further emphasize light direction. A good example of someone who does that is 'as109'. You never give your characters chins which I think in turn causes you to lob off the top part of the head making them seem more circular than they should be.
