Reason why is because westerners would prefer to read their comics online, which makes it much easier for artists to spread their comics around without having to shell out for printing and insane booth prices. The Japanese are different in that buying doujinshi to them is like buying prints at a convention to us, it's nice to actually own the shit you're paying for while also meeting the artist.
In reality, Comic-con and other conventions with artists alleys are insanely expensive to run if you're not breaking even with sales at your booth, and conventions becoming increasingly corporatized by selling out to large publishers and jacking up booth pricing isn't helping, and artists just don't want to take that risk if they don't sell well. And todays artists comics are borderline slop so that's not gonna work.

I doubt it. Touhou Project is ZUN's IP and he won't let that go, since he basically uses the game to produce music and pretty bullet patterns. It's a passion project more than a marketable game as a "service". I fully expect the project to die when he dies, because nobody else can create the same feeling game like ZUN. Anything left of the series after that will be fan works/games, with the community basically holding the entire series and encouraging a few new people to try the game. Everyone, who isn't already a diehard for the series, will move on. Get over yourself. Life hasn't ended.
