Finish watching this movie and I can recommend. At least I felt it was "good", with complex characters. Izumi Ashikawa's character almost stolen the show for me again.

I know that this movie isn't that old, but at times it reminded me of even older movies from before the war. A few years ago when I had the idea of watching old japanese movies because I liked the ones I had already watched, I started with the oldest I could find from the most known directors. It was a huge surprise to see those boring old directors being all dynamic and experimental during their youths. There's some camera work here that reminded me a bit of that era.
But don't watch for this reason, watch for the characters and while Izumi is cute and funny the best performance was from Yukiko Todoroki. As expected Yûjirô Ishihara is subpar, a shame that he wasn't better in his scenes with her, even so she's still able to shine bright.
