i always played controller, 1p. i had to drill myself so hard to learn 1048 that i developed the habit of wristscratching, because as you said yourself, theres no good way to cover scratch+3+5 playing 1048. but wristscratching like that has taken me pretty goddamn far, i can clear just about anything that way, and top-tier players like RAG play that way anyway. but since theres such a stigma about wrist scratching, right now im trying to drill myself into learning symmetrical, because handshots i've seen of people better than me show them playing symmetrical on sections of songs that throw constant scratch+intense chord streams.

in regards to taka s, for myself, i've never been able to use my left thumb to cover 3 unless its a slow part of the song, and i really, really, focus. covering 3 with right thumb for me, comes natural. sounds like its the opposite for you. i would just embrace what is natural for you.

for scratch+1,3,4,5, i also use my index (sometimes right ring gets involved) for something like this, but not out of drilling it into my style, rather out of sheer instinct. this is the only way my brain lets me hit such a thing. i dont even realize i'm doing it, its just the only way i can hit such a chord.

also, one of my rivals has played for so long, he can play anything 1048. even something like plan 8. if you just retard-brute-force yourself, your pinky will stretch that far. probably not good for your health in the long run, or maybe requires special genetics, but its possible, i've seen it.
