If I recall correctly, Bep was the only other DD k2 at the time and taking a DD to level 70 seemed like an impossible task to me at the time. Poipoi K2's implementation was what inspired me to take a ship from level 1 to K2.

Poipoi kind of also ushered the age of "DDs that are just simply statistically superior" though. I kind of liked how before that, 3-2 was done using only DDs of your personal preference (with Shimakaze and Yukikaze if you have them).
Since then, it's pretty all about the K2 Krew.
