Personal headcanon dictates that if it's striking something that would, for lack of a better term for it, have no life energy it'd function exactly like you would expect a weapon made of metal to. When it strikes flesh it'd cause a dull sensation as if it'd been severed. Say for instance, you strike a person's neck with the cleaver a Redcap carries, and your entire body goes limp for a time while the spirit mends.

It's all about where you hit them, though it'd make writing a crazy Redcap fun because of cutting the feet with it and watching him crawl away.
