Yes, it's clearly a product aimed at the single man who has a day job and an absolute metric ton of disposable income (the type of person who lives in an apartment by himself and frequently buys niche products like figures and perhaps spends tons of money in online games), but not really any personal relationships. People like this still have friends, but they mostly hang around in chat rooms and shit and probably never even heard each other's voices. The guy comes home and has nobody waiting for him but his computer, which isn't such a big deal, but a product like this is interesting in that it puts "someone" else in the apartment that doesn't require a commitment any bigger than keeping the base plugged into the wall.

Why is it such a surprise to you people who say it's cringey and depressing, that people like this exist? I myself am like this and I have about half a dozen friends who live exactly in said conditions and could very easily buy one of these out of curiosity.

It's only foreign and strange to you because you want it to be, you probably already have friends in real life and of course you wouldn't trade them for this, so the product doesn't really do anything for you. If you're like that, then all the more power to you, but you've come to wince at the wrong thing.
