I've also thought this myself with black harpies. But I also like to think they make modifications to the homes. Like, you've got a neighborhood they crudely wall off. On the rooves of the houses, they build large nests. This is the only way in and out of the house, through the roof, for which there is a hole, usually a hatch with a ladder that leads into the second floor of the home.
