The problem with Buddhism is that it has become so watered down that it's not really even Buddhism anymore. The Buddhism that westerners talk about and love so much is new age Buddhism that is filtered to be easy to digest for a very secular audience.

It's easy to say that Buddhism doesn't contradict science when what you're reading doesn't really say anything about it at all. It remains as vague as possible about those things and it promotes very general and positive values like kindness and selflessness which everyone already agrees are pretty good things.

There's nothing unique about Buddhism.

Why don't you use your mind to shape your perception of reality, /jp/?

Ultimately everything you see, feel, and experience is generated by your mind. If you break down the barriers inside of your mind that hold you back from merging imagination with reality then you can shape your world to be anything you want it to be.

You could live in Gensokyo and be talking to your favorite touhou right now. The only thing stopping you are the safety barriers that your mind puts up to prevent this, but you can easily break them down.

Miscellaneous question, as long as you're using an Evangelion screenshot: why did Shinji turn into a total wimp and not kiss Asuka after she murmured something in her sleep about her mother?

I don't get it. That would make me wanna kiss her more, since she obviously needed someone to be with her.

I'm saving up my SSI money so I can buy a little piece of land that's far enough away from people that I never have to see anyone, but close enough that I can get an internet connection. Then I'm going to buy a little trailer, put it on the land, and live in that. I'll pay whatever taxes I'll have with the SSI.

Your mind has the power to create whatever you want in life. You could create a boyfriend that you could talk to you, you could see him as clear as you could see any real person, you could touch him, smell him, he would interact with all of your senses. If you begin a relationship with another human though then you will temporarily satisfy your loneliness, but your happiness is now attached to this person and their emotional whims and the actions that they take can make you happy one moment and horribly depressed the next.

The mind is the answer. It can create whatever you want. There is no disappointment because whoever you create will be completely idealized.

Look to the people of the old prisons in the world. You could throw a sane man into a cell, cut him off from all social contact and stimulation, and that extreme degree of isolation would cause him to create imaginary entities that he could see and speak with. The same power can be tapped into by anyone. The mind is a wonderful thing and most people have only scratched the surface of what it is capable of doing.
