>BAs in non-engineering science aren't very valuable. Stuff like biology needs a research level degree to really be worth something.

I graduated with a BS Biology, used it to get a 50k/year job in Pharma.

First step, was to make sure I got plenty of lab experience with a diverse array of techniques (HPLC, cell culture, ELISA, various kinds of blots/electrophoresis, other stuff). Unlike students pursuing the advanced/academic track, your publications and professors aren't so important; the goal is to pick up a smorgasbord of techniques industry will need.

Then, identify and pursue jobs that are technically demanding, but mind-numbing/soul-sucking, with little opportunity for advancement (Hello Quality Control) -- in return, you'll usually find it comes with decent pay in a boring but stable environment.

Landing the first job is the hardest, but if you perform well you'll be set for however long you can put up with it (for me, that was about 8 years).

Good luck.
