Things that involve guaranteed death and loss of life tend to have threatening appearances. Generally, the people who design them don't really put too much effort into making them appear pleasant to look at.

One thing to wonder, though: Even though death is an integral part of Japanese culture, they don't really seem to be too moved by it. I mean, not even America or the UK ever used suicide weapons. What motivated the Japanese leadership to develop down this path?
