Somehow Yukari had managed to displace one of the cursed bracelets beads with a gap without separating it from the whole which was impossible since the thing was bound to me. The result was an empty ‘space’ which had been slowly filled with runoff of Seija and my own spirit that leaked from our mutual connection which was growing into its own consciousness. In short, I was bearing a child, Seija’s and my own.
The response to this news had thrown a damper towel on the mood then any of the jabs Satori had managed up until this point. Yuugi passed on our fight for now, not wanting to bash a pregnant couple, but stated ‘she wouldn’t hold back if we appeared in front of her again’, which I think was just her trying to save face. Satori reached her limit and was carted off by Orin, who gave Seija and I room keys and promised to bring her up in the morning to direct us to New Hell, as was promised. Seija had stormed off to clear her head over the whole matter, which I didn’t blame her for.
Which Is how I ended up here, brushing Kioshi’s hair, Kanako sitting on one side of me, Satori’s hound nestled up on the other. The wavy green hair was familiar to me, as was the technique of gently brushing a little more of it each time to avoid painfully pulling on it, but I just couldn’t remember the girl. I was told this wasn’t unusual for the Youkai, made me start to wonder if certain gaps in my memory weren’t due to the passage of time, but had been Kioshi instead. Or was that just how Youkai were born…
“Eh he he, you’ve gotten really good at this haven’t you Goro.” She remarked.
“Don’t be so easily fooled Kioshi. This man is allied with Yukari after all.” Kanako warned in a plain tone.
“You shouldn’t be so mean Kanako! After all, Goro is pregnant.”
I winced. Every time it was said the weirder it felt to hear. I wanted to talk with Seija desperately, but I knew there were times when I should leave her alone and now was one of those times.
“Aren’t you as well Kioshi? And with two partners, that’s quite the accomplishment.” I complimented.
“Yup! Although it makes me feel sorry for everyone else. There’s only going to be so much of Anon going around and I at least have Kanako.”
At this, the Menreiki turned away. I couldn’t tell what her mask was at this angle, although I imagined her feelings toward Kioshi’s abnormal pregnancy were like my own.
“Why ally with Yukari. What exactly do you and the Amanojaku stand to gain?” Kanako asked.
“In a word: Revitalization” I start “If Yukari falls too easily it’ll be just like any other incident. ‘Huray! We beat the troublemaker’, and everyone will shirk all the responsibility. It can’t go on like this, too much is about to change. So, we’re going to make it hard for them, show them that all the weight of their history, all their strength, isn’t worth squat to the upheaval that’s about to happen.”
“Even if you two perish?” Kanako added.
“I don’t plan on it! Besides, before I even allied with Yukari, I put a lot of little schemes in motion. With any luck, the Winter Solstice will be the least bloody and most impactful event in all of history.”
“And your child?” Kioshi asked.
This gave me pause. What would happen if I died? Something horrible no doubt, but would this affect the new soul that I was currently bearing? I didn’t know, but I felt there was a way to figure some of this out.
“Beyond the upheaval, Yukari promised Seija and I something, an ‘Impossible Meeting’, someone that she said would help us understand our connection better. I don’t think Yukari knows about the child, but I think whoever she introduces us to might.” I sighed. “And I’m bound to protect the HSE as Yukari tells me it’s secrets. There’s no going back on that deal.”
“Well…” Kioshi began, letting her head fall backwards into my lap. “Maybe you could just ask for maternity leave!”
I suppressed a laugh. Something about this feeling was familiar alright. I think I even heard Kanako giggle.
“Hey, why are you even with such a nasty looking woman anyway? I thought Goro would marry one of the priestesses.” Kioshi asked.
“That’s like saying I’d marry my mother.” I said, clasping her ears and shaking her head. “It’s because Seija loves me.”
“Oh!” Kioshi said, shooting up. “So, Goro is the kind of guy who rolls over to aggressive women!” She said pleased with herself.
Kanako steadied the excited girl, seemingly worried about her injuring herself with sudden moves.
“I’m not that easy. Her feelings are just so strong it’s impossible for me not to respond in kind.” I smile.
“Even though you’re worried she might hurt people like she did to you?” Kanako asked, holding a squirming Kioshi.
“Nobody has a perfect relationship.” I said, looking at the bracelet. “And I don’t want any child of mine to lack a mother or a father.”
Kioshi, looking as if she has an idea, puts her ear to my wrist. “I think I hear a heartbeat! You should show Seija!” She says, pulling me off the coach and pushing me along.
