Because they were 11/13 years old when they joined Babymetal. I don't know about you, but I don't know that many professional 12 year old metal guitarists who are also in a j-pop group. They came from j-pop first and then got into metal with a band assembled for them.

Not anymore. Whenever you see an older music video with the skeleton mask "band", those guys aren't actually playing either, they're just a "mime" band and the music is done via plyback. They did that when they first started because they weren't popular enough to hire a touring band and coming from j-pop there is really never a band sharing the stage with the idols.

Like I said though, they now have a rotating roster of legitimate musicians to go on tour with who play in local Japanese metal and even international metal bands. The dudes in white robes and make-up are the real band.

There's a difference between backing tracks and playback.

Some of the stuff like the male growls/screams (as well as a handful of the girl's vocals like the initial screams/shouts in iine and ijime dame zettai) and the electronica/piano are done with playback and likely always will be unless they get a touring DJ/keyboard/backup vocal guy.

However, they're way past doing vocals through playback (I think Moa & Yui might still rely on them half the time) and if they're playing with the Kami Band then instrumentals are 100% live. The skeleton "band" is what they use with playback,
