For a go-to font pick something sans serif that is easily readable/distinct at a relatively low resolution. All-caps bold-by-default fonts like Anime Ace do particularly well. Thin, trailing, or varying opacity decorative fonts, on the other hand, are not good for general uses but can be used to distinguish special uses. For example, in >>38615561 I used a serif font to convey the "newspaper quote" tone. Special effects/onomatopoeias could use a decorative font or be drawn by hand, like they are in the source. Take care when aligning the text, as it affects the visual appeal just as much as the font choice. IMO, when you can, it's best to disregard punctuation when aligning the text, only taking letters into account.
