For the sides I think I used pine wood planks... anything that is not MDF is okay (MDF is too porous and you will have problems to painting it). The bottom of the case is MDF though, as is cheaper and you can't see it from the outside.

For painting I used a first layer of primer to prepare the wood and then a synthetic enamel paint: something with a lacquer that hides the wood veins and leaves a glossy finish.The only exception is the red line: I used acrylic paint for that.

If you use more than one colour, use mask tapes like these to make straight lines and leave the paint to dry for a good day or two between layers (I applied two for colour).
