Yet the characters in it should not be aware of that - like you just yourself said. From the perspective of Battler, Erika and company, Umineko should not be "fantasy vs. mystery", it should be "fantasy vs. reality". Even though we, the actual readers, know it's a mystery, nobody inside the game world or even meta world should know. (Maybe Featherine should be allowed to know, but fuck her, she's not interesting in the first place.)

I get what you mean, and I agree - the rules themselves are okay and serve just to guarantee that the story is solvable and it's the interpretation and awareness of the rules that's the problem. That's pretty much what I meant. But that doesn't change that episode five is pure bullfuckery, because of that awareness and the replacement of actual detective work with appeal to rules and redtext falling from the sky.

Out of episodes so far I'd definitely rank 5 the lowest of all. So far 6 has been much, much better.
