Japan has lots of anime, manga, hentai, and video games with western fantasy settings after all.

So why don't they like Tolkien? The only Tolkien related fan art I've seen on pixiv is tracings of characters from the Peter Jackson films.

Gandalf talks about this at one point in the book.

The reason is that Sauron had never even considered that his enemies would seek to destroy his ring.

The fellowship's only hope rested on that fact. Also, that's why it was imperative for the ring to be taken to Mordor by stealth.

If Sauron knew that his enemies were trying to make their way into his kingdom, he'd figure out what was going on (which is another reason why flying eagles into Mordor is a fucking stupid idea).
