Even as someone whose favorite group is the SDM, I can see and understand where you're coming from.

I think part of it is just that they're just so easy to work with as a group of characters. You've got a bunch of different archetypes, with all different kinds of interactions between them. The group as a whole is also independent enough that you can throw just about any situation at them (or vice versa) and come up with something or other.

It also takes a lot less effort on the part of the writer to create stories involving them. You don't have to know shit about Buddhism or ancient Japanese politics or folklore or ANYTHING. It's just a house owned by a Vampire and her various servants. Double this if the writer is from the west, where they're obviously a lot more likely to encounter the western vampire archetypes than pretty much anything else in Touhou.
